Magazine, Sept. 1997 "Sister's Who Shape"
(Meet
the absolute punkest women in our sport, those who
shape surfboards) this month: Shannon Payne-McIntyre
from:
Santee, CA Years living: 22
months
shaping:7
years
surfing: 7
#
of boards shaped: 10
label:
Shannon Surfboards
Inspired to shape by: "My husband Shayne McIntyre
and Adam Gillespie."
clientele:
"one of my friends I met in Sumbawa, and my brother. I also
just got four boards in Water Girl surfshop, a women's surfshop."
short-term
goals: "To become recognized as a shaper."
long-term
goals: "To invite women to explore new avenues in surfing,
to venture out more and do the things they really want to
do."
why
shaping: "I'm an artist, and I was looking for a new medium
that
would be more functional surfboards are a more functional
canvas."
response
from other craftsman: "I went to several different
shapers and showed them my boards and they got really stoked
and kept encouraging me to do it."
best
thing about shaping your own boards: "Being able to ride on
of your won creations, it's so magical (riding) your own boards,
you did all the dimensions...and just the thing about designing
a
board that works for you."
advice
to budding grommet shapers of the world: "Find a good
shaper and just watch them and learn from them and ask a lot
of questions. Find someone who has enough time to help you-not
too many people give away their secrets...or, just try to
find a job
roughing boards, like planing down the blanks for a shaper."
(She
might be the best looking shaper on earth)
